Once we knew our project would be for middle school students, we immediately sought the advice and support of the Philadelphia Education Fund. The Ed Fund’s mission is to improve the quality of public education in Philadelphia and the region, so that youth are prepared for college and careers. We were also aware of their recent research study identifying the four powerful predictors of falling off track to graduation (1. Attending school 80% or less of the time; 2. Receiving a poor final behavior mark; 3. Failing Math; 4. Failing English). Known as “the Early Warning Indicators” their research concluded that if a sixth grade student had any of the four indicators, they only had a 10-20% chance of graduating with his/her peers. It was with their support that we tailored many of the questions within the game to touch upon these indicators to further warn parents and teachers of any student who might need additional support.
